The North Shore of Kauai

How is Kauai different from all the other Hawaiian Islands? This was the first question I asked myself when I spontaneously booked a flight to this not so familiar destination. All I knew was they have exceptional coffee and some incredible hiking trails, but how are the beaches? After spending a week traveling along its coast, I can assure you that these beaches are nothing short of incredible.

Each beach has different qualities that appeal to any world traveler. Whether you’re looking for some adventure or relaxation, Kauai has the beach to fit your lifestyle. I’ve decided to focus on the North Shore of Kauai since that is the most popular tourist destination. Below I have reviewed 5 unique beaches that are sure to make your Hawaiian bucket list.

Tunnels Beach: To start off, one of my absolute favorite beaches in all of Kauai is Tunnels Beach. This tucked away spot is located on the North Shore and is great for sunbathers and snorkelers alike. Travelers will be surrounded by its beautiful wildlife not only in the water but also on land. This beach is hidden within lush mountains and cascading waterfalls. A 5 minute walk can lead you to calm waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

Ke’e Beach: If you continue driving along highway 650, you will eventually end up at Ke’e Beach. This is the farthest point on the north shore that you can drive. It has a lagoon great for snorkeling with a white sandy shore. If you are looking for privacy this beach may not be your best option considering it is small and attracts a large crowd in the summer months.

Hanakapiai Beach: Craving a little adventure in your vacation? Try doing a 2 mile hike along the Napali Coast to Hanakapiai beach. Although the ocean currents are too strong to swim here, the natural beauty of this trail is absolutely breath taking. While hiking through fragrant pineapple and guava trees, you can see the most spectacular views of the famous Napali Coast.

Haena Beach: Your sun soaked day starts to fade and the evening breeze takes its place. What’s a good spot for a fantastic sunset? Look no further then Haena Beach. As night approaches, the watercolor-painted sunsets will come alive against the black silhouettes of nearby mountains. This beach has some choppy waters and rocky shores, so I would not recommend spending an entire day here. Arrive in the early evening and make sure to take a stroll along its extended shoreline to catch the most spectacular sunsets.

Kauapea (Secret) Beach: Looking for a hidden gem? Head on over to Kauapea Beach. A 5-10 minute walk down a dirt path will take you to a quiet stretch of coastline surrounded by green rain forest. A light house sits on top of a cliff acting as the beaches signature landmark. Although this is a peaceful place for laying out and sunbathing, it is not recommended to go for a swim due to its rough surf, strong currents and jellyfish. If you’re up for one of the islands best kept secrets, then this is a beach you don’t want to miss.

[…] My first recommendation to view this tropical coast is by hiking. There are several different destinations that range in difficulty level along the Kalalau trail. For a day hike, visitors can either go to Hanakapiai Beach (2 miles) or if they have all day, I suggest to continue on to Hanakapiai falls (4 miles). If you want more information about Hanakapiai beach, check out my North Shore of Kauai post! […]
