If there’s one place that looks like it was practically designed for Christmas, it’s Salzburg.
I’ve visited quite a few Christmas markets around Europe over the years, and I’ve learned that the destination itself makes a huge difference. Salzburg already has all the ingredients for a perfect Christmas market destination: a beautiful Old Town, Alpine scenery, historic squares, and the Hohensalzburg Fortress towering above the city.
Add wooden market stalls, festive lights, and a mug of Glühwein, and it’s pretty hard to beat.
While the famous Salzburg Christmas Market around the cathedral is the star of the show, there are several Christmas markets in Salzburg worth visiting. This guide covers the best ones, where to stay, what to eat, and what else to do during a winter trip to Salzburg.

When Is the Salzburg Christmas Market in 2026?

If you’re looking to do a Christmas market trip before the December crowds, you’re in luck. The main Salzburg Christmas Market opens on November 19, 2026 and continues through January 1, 2027, making it one of the best Christmas markets to visit outside of the month of December.
The market is generally open from morning until around 8:30 or 9:00 PM, although opening hours change around Christmas and New Year’s.
Personally, I always recommend visiting European Christmas markets during early December if you can. You’ll get the full Advent experience without quite as many of the last-minute holiday crowds.
Where Is the Main Salzburg Christmas Market?
The main Salzburg Christkindlmarkt takes place across Domplatz and Residenzplatz in Salzburg’s Old Town, right beside Salzburg Cathedral. If you’re staying near the center, it’s honestly impossible to miss.
This is the market you’ll see in most photos of Salzburg at Christmas, with traditional wooden stalls, a large Christmas tree, local crafts, food, and plenty of mulled wine.
I’d visit once during the day when it’s easier to browse and again after sunset. The entire square feels different once the lights come on and everyone is walking around enjoying the holiday cheer.
Best Christmas Markets in Salzburg

You could easily stick to the main market, but I think part of the fun of Salzburg during Advent is exploring a few of the smaller markets too. When I came to Salzburg on a solo trip, I absolutely loved exploring all the small markets scattered across the city. And when I needed a break from the cold, I would just duck into a quiet coffee shop or bar for an hour or two to warm up.
1. Salzburger Christkindlmarkt
If it’s your first visit, start with the Salzburger Christkindlmarkt at Domplatz and Residenzplatz.
This is Salzburg’s main market and the most traditional of the bunch. Expect wooden huts selling ornaments, handmade gifts, food, Christmas decorations, and plenty of warm drinks.
It can get busy on December weekends, so come earlier if you want to properly shop. Then return after dark for the atmosphere.
2. Hohensalzburg Fortress Advent Market
For the best setting, head up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
The Advent market here sits above the city, with incredible views over Salzburg and the surrounding mountains. Even the walk toward Fortress Hohensalzburg gets a festive makeover, with illuminated stars and twinkling Christmas lights.
I’d go in the late afternoon so you can see the views during daylight and stay as the city begins to light up below you.
3. Hellbrunner Adventzauber
The Hellbrunner Adventzauber at Hellbrunn Palace is one of the most unique Salzburg Christmas markets.
The palace grounds are transformed with hundreds of Christmas trees and thousands of lights. You’ll find handicrafts, regional food, family activities, and traditional Krampus events.
It’s outside the Old Town, so you’ll need to make a little more effort to get there. Still, if you have two or three days in Salzburg, I think it’s worth it.
4. Mirabell Christmas Market
The Mirabell Christmas Market is held on Mirabell Square, directly in front of the Palace.
It’s much smaller than the main Christmas market, but it’s still cute to check out. Stop here for regional food, handicrafts, and mulled wine while exploring the Mirabell side of the river.
The Mirabell market runs from November 19 through December 31, 2026.
5. Stern Advent Market
The Stern Advent Market is another smaller option tucked into Salzburg’s historic center.
I wouldn’t necessarily build your entire itinerary around it, but it’s exactly the kind of market worth stopping at when you happen to be passing by.
Leave yourself some time to wander. One of the best things about Salzburg during the Christmas season is stumbling across decorated courtyards and smaller Advent stalls between the bigger attractions.
What to Eat at the Salzburg Christmas Markets

Come hungry because Austrian Christmas markets are almost as much about the food as they are the shopping. I definitely sipped and sampled my way through every Christmas market I passed, which honestly, is exactly how I suggest spending your time here.
Start with Glühwein, the traditional hot spiced wine served throughout the markets. You’ll normally pay a deposit for your mug, which you can return or keep as a souvenir. I have a collection of these souvenir mugs from all my Christmas market travels!
Also look for:
- Austrian sausages
- Roasted chestnuts and almonds
- Pretzels
- Gingerbread and Christmas cookies
- Potato dishes
- Apple strudel
- Salzburger Nockerl
Things to Do in Salzburg Besides the Christmas Markets

As much as I love a good Christmas market, I wouldn’t spend your entire trip hopping between them. Salzburg is a beautiful city with lots of history, so pencil in some time for site-seeing and just enjoying the city.
Explore Salzburg’s Old Town
Spend a few hours simply wandering the historic center. Getreidegasse is Salzburg’s famous shopping street and home to Mozart’s birthplace, while the surrounding lanes are filled with cafes, shops, and beautiful historic buildings.
It’s especially beautiful in December when everything is decorated for the Christmas season.
Visit Hohensalzburg Fortress
Even if you don’t visit during the market, Hohensalzburg Fortress is worth seeing. It dominates the Salzburg skyline and has some of the best views over the city.
Visit Mirabell Palace
Walk across the Salzach River to Mirabell Palace and its famous gardens, which you might recognize from The Sound of Music.
From here, it’s easy to stop at the market on Mirabell Square before walking back toward the Old Town.
Experience Krampus
Christmas in Austria comes with a slightly darker tradition too. Around St Nicholas Day in early December, you may encounter a Krampus parade, where people dressed in elaborate horned masks and costumes take to the streets.
While I didn’t get to see this parade myself, it’s definitely one of the more memorable ways to experience Austrian Christmas traditions.
Where to Stay in Salzburg for the Christmas Markets
If you’re visiting specifically for the Salzburg Christmas markets, stay as close to the Old Town as your budget allows. Salzburg is very walkable, and being able to reach the main market in a few minutes is particularly nice when it’s freezing outside.
Here are my top hotels in Salzburg:
- Hotel Sacher Salzburg (Luxury): A classic luxury hotel along the Salzach River, within walking distance of both Mirabell and the Old Town.
- Design Hotel zum Hirschen Salzburg (Boutique): A smaller boutique property a little further out from the center but offers a beautiful and comfortable stay.
- Leonardo Boutique Hotel Salzburg Gablerbräu (Mid-range): A charming and more affordable Old Town option within easy walking distance of the main sights and markets.
For a Christmas trip, I’d prioritize location over having a huge hotel room. You’ll probably spend most of your time exploring anyway.
Day Trips From Salzburg in December
If you have more than three days, Salzburg is also a great base for exploring this part of Austria.
Hallstatt
Hallstatt is one of Austria’s most famous villages, and its lake and mountain setting is particularly beautiful in winter. While I personally did not have time to go on my trip, it’s a place that’s high on my bucket list that I hope I can visit some day. Keep in mind that December days are short, though, so start early if you’re visiting as a day trip.
St. Gilgen
For something a little quieter, consider St. Gilgen on Wolfgangsee. The villages surrounding the lake have their own Advent traditions and make a nice contrast to Salzburg. You can also look into the St. Leonhard Advent Market south of Salzburg if you’d prefer something more local.
How Many Days Do You Need in Salzburg at Christmas?
I recommend two to three full days. Or, you can do what I did, and combine Salzburg with a Vienna Christmas market trip.
With two days, you can see the main Salzburg Christmas Market, explore the Old Town and Mirabell, visit the fortress, and fit in another nearby Christmas market.
Three days gives you more time for a day trip or a more relaxed pace to your trip.
Tips for Visiting the Salzburg Christmas Markets
Now, I remember when I planned my trip the one thing I wished I did differently was bring warmer clothes. Of course, I knew it was going to be cold. But it snowed a lot when I went and I did not have the proper waterproof gear to spend hours at a time outdoors. Bring proper winter shoes and warm layers.
Carry a little cash too. Many vendors accept cards, but smaller stalls may still prefer cash.
I’d also visit the popular markets earlier in the day if you want to shop. Evenings are much busier, but that’s when you’ll get the best festive atmosphere.
Most importantly, don’t try to squeeze every market into one day. Pick a few favorites and give yourself time to actually enjoy them.

Visiting the Salzburg, Austria Christmas Market
For me, what makes Salzburg special isn’t necessarily having the biggest Christmas market in Europe. It’s the setting.
You can wander through the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt, explore the Old Town, head up to the fortress, and finish your evening with a hot mug of Glühwein, all without spending half the day getting from one place to another.
Two or three days is enough to experience the highlights without rushing, and there’s plenty to see beyond the markets themselves.
If you’re planning a European Christmas market trip this December, Salzburg absolutely deserves a spot on the list.
