As the temperatures rise and the days grow longer, European cities always seem to take on a new glow that entices travelers from both near and far.

With an old world nostalgia and a classic charm, summertime awakens cities across Europe and invites travelers to enjoy a summer they’ll never forget. Between the beautifully-preserved towns, inviting plazas, and lively cobblestoned streets, Europe truly makes for the perfect playground for a sweet summer escape.

But where should you visit exactly? In this article, I covered some of my personal favorite hidden gems in Europe that are perfect for your summer travel itinerary. While these spots may not be on the typical list of “best summer destinations in Europe”, I can promise you they are just as good, if not better.

In case you’re wondering…Mykonos and Amalfi Coast did not make the list.

Let’s dive right in!

Hidden Gems in Europe: My Favorite Summer Beach Destinations

Costa Brava, Spain

There’s something so magical about the small town charm you typically find in Southern Europe. With worn, cobblestone streets and breathtaking views of the mediterranean sea, southern Europe really is the perfect place for a relaxing vacay away. And one of the greatest hidden gems in my eyes is the Costa Brava along the Spanish coastline.

If you are traveling to Barcelona, Spain during the summer season, you’re definitely going to want to pencil in a few days to Costa Brava into your travel plans. For me, the towns of Costa Brava truly are the epitome of summer. Being based in Barcelona, I’ve spent many summers escaping the crowded city to go to picturesque villages like Cadaques, Calella de Palafrugell, or Begur.

This stunning stretch of coastline in Spain is an absolute gem. With rugged cliffs, hidden coves, and sparkling blue waters, it really is a playground for beach lovers, adventure seekers, and nature enthusiasts alike. The coastal towns here are beaming with charm, offering glimpses of colorful homes, busy restaurants, and lazy sailboats wading in the Mediterranean sea just right off shore.

Formentera, Spain

Formentera, Spain has some of the best beaches in Europe without a doubt. If not the best. While most travelers flock to Mallorca for their summer holidays, what they really don’t know is there are other islands right next door that are more charming, less crowded, and far less basic. Yep, Formentera really is my favorite hidden gem.

This little slice of paradise is situated right off the coast of Spain and is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from its more famous neighbors, Mallorca and Ibiza, Spain. Popular for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and relaxed vibes, Formentera offers the perfect European beach destination if you are looking to truly relax and disconnect. With an area of just 83 square kilometers, it’s a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, while still providing plenty of beach bars and seafood restaurants to enjoy during your holiday away.

Menorca, Spain

If you’re looking for a little more action than Formentera but still crave an idyllic Spanish summer destination, Menorca just might be the perfect spot. With sun soaked calas (coves) and inviting chiringuitos (beach bars), Menorca offers the perfect blend of both relaxation and fun.

Since Menorca is larger than Formentera, there tends to be more things to do. Whether you decide to explore its pristine beaches like Cala Macarella, hike the Cami de Cavalls coastal trail, or visit historic sites like the lively city of Ciutadella, there is plenty to do and see when visiting this gorgeous island destination.

The Turquoise Coast, Turkey

Turkey has so much more to offer than just Istanbul. In fact, I believe that its unspoiled coastline is one of the country’s greatest attractions. Why? Well, Turkey boasts breathtaking turquoise waters, pristine white sand beaches, and picturesque coastal towns, all with the added benefit of fewer tourists compared to other popular European summer hotspots.

In my personal experience, I absolutely loved the town of Kas and its surrounding area. Aside from Kas, I highly recommend renting a car and embarking on a scenic drive along the Turquoise Coast. This allows you to hop from one town to another, indulging in the charm of each coastal destination and making the most of the beautiful Mediterranean sunshine. To be honest, there are tons of beautiful places in this region and no matter where you choose to explore, I’m confident it will be worthwhile.

Sardinia, Italy

When talking about Italy, Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre, Capri, and Rome, are the typical destinations people think of when planning a summer vacation. While all of these destinations are definitely worth a visit, I suggest heading to Sardinia, Italy if you want a truly unique and unforgettable Italian experience. Unlike the other Italian towns that tourists typically gravitate towards during the summer months, Sardinia is lowkey, unassuming, and just simply beautiful. It doesn’t try to cater to the crowds. In fact, I think it’s one of the best places to see Italy in its true authenticity.

With its stunning beaches boasting crystal-clear turquoise waters, rugged cliffs, and pristine sand, this European destination offers an idyllic coastal getaway for both nature lovers and sunshine seekers alike. The island is also home to vibrant cities and charming towns that exude history, culture, and delicious restaurants. Whether you feel like exploring ancient ruins, hiking scenic trails, or sampling some of Sardinia’s Cannonau wine, this island has endless things to do and explore.

Milos, Greece

When envisioning summers in Europe, many immediately conjure images of the enchanting white and blue towns of Greece, such as Mykonos or Santorini. While these islands are undeniably beautiful, they tend to be the sole focus for most people when planning a visit to the Greek islands. However, if you yearn to venture off the beaten path and discover Greece’s hidden gems, consider directing your attention towards the islands of Milos and Kimolos.

Milos is a beautiful place that offers a serene escape from the bustling crowds, presenting a plethora of experiences with its picturesque villages, pristine white-washed towns, and charming seaside restaurants. This idyllic island is both romantic yet adventurous, providing everything you would want in a Greek island getaway.

If you’re looking to extend your summer holiday, consider making a quick visit to Kimolos, an island that exudes even more charm and tranquility than its well-known counterpart. It’s the perfect place to simply rent a quad bike and embark on an exploration around the island.

Tenerife, Spain

If you’re seeking a destination that combines outdoor adventures with relaxing beaches, Tenerife, Spain is the perfect spot. While the beaches alone may not be the primary draw, what I truly appreciate about this island is its ability to cater to diverse interests. For those who enjoy hiking, the opportunity to conquer Teide, the island’s volcano, and explore its surrounding natural park is a great option. On the other hand, if you prefer lounging on the beach, Tenerife offers a variety of beautiful coastal areas to visit and unwind. With its diverse attractions, Tenerife truly has something for everyone.
